William A. Current, Sr. (b. May 4, 1933) is a Republican member of the North Carolina House of Representatives. He has represented District 109 since 2005.

Current received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Science degrees from the University of North Carolina in, respectively, 1956 and 1958. He is a dentist. He and his wife, Elizabeth Oden, have four children: Elizabeth, Sara, Ange and William, Jr.

Ballot initiatives bill

On February 4, 2009, John Blust, Curtis Blackwood, William A. Current, Sr., Timothy K. Moore and Edgar V. Starnes introduced North Carolina House Bill 47 (2009), which would establish ballot initiatives in that state. Under HB 47, initiatives would need the signatures of 20% of those who voted in the last gubernatorial election.[1]

If the bill passes, the voters would vote in November 2010 on whether they want the initiative.

E-mail controversy

In March 2010 Current received an invitation to a celebration of women's history at the North Carolina Museum of History. He declined it in an email saying, "Thanks for your kind invitation. However, I must regret for I have promised to be at the organizational meeting of the ‘White male' history society. Sincerely, WAC." However, instead of only going to the organizers, Current accidentally sent it to the entire state House.

Jill Dinwiddie, Executive Director of the Council for Women, said the comment "smacks of racism and chauvinism."

Current said he would not apologize, replying, "I was just trying to be funny, if you really want to know the truth. I'm a little weary about all the division in this country about race and gender."[2]
