The application for a petition to recall Thompson was submitted on April 6, 2011 to the city clerk's office in Houston by Houston City Councilwoman Ruth Blanchard and Houston Planning Commissioner Ralph Buzard. In their petition, they said that Thompson "committed misconduct in office by offering a false instrument for recording in the first degree in violation of Alaska Statute 11.46.550 and theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received or held in violation of Alaska Statute 11.46.210."[1] The recall petition asserts that when Thompson was out-of-state in November 2010, she nevertheless filled out a timecard and accepted employment pay.[2]
The term that Thompson is serving is set to end in the normal course of events in October 2011.[3]

50 valid signatures of Houston registered voters are required to force a special recall election. Supporters of the recall submitted 63.[3]
