South Dakota Legislative Term Extension Amendment (2012)

The South Dakota Legislative Term Extension Amendment may appear on the November 6, 2012 ballot in the state of South Dakota as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment. The proposal would amend state constitution to allow state legislators to serve up to six consecutive two-year terms, instead of the current four consecutive two-year terms. The measure is being sponsored by State Rep. James Bolin.

Path to the ballot

Section 1 of Article XXIII of the South Dakota Constitution says that the South Dakota State Legislature can refer a proposed amendment to the state's voters through a majority vote.
