Under Rhode Island law, it is up to the local governments to first approve all new building and renovations that do not require a referendum.[1] Rhode Island requires all new construction or renovations to be approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The state approval requirement is there to ensure sure all buildings meet the Rhode Island's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education standards for technology.[2]
