Santa Clara County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors. They are elected every four years from one of the five supervisorial districts into which the county is divided. Supervisors can serve no more than three terms. Santa Clara County voters also elect the District Attorney, Sheriff, and Assessor.
Santa Clara County operates under a "charter" form of government. This charter was first approved by the county's voters in 1951 and underwent a significant voter-approved revision in 2006.
The population of Santa Clara County as of the 2010 census was 1,781,642. The City of San Jose is the county seat. Santa Clara County is considered to be one of the nine Bay Area counties and of those, it has the largest population. There are 15 cities in the county: Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga, and Sunnyvale.
