Recall of the Bloomfield Hills School Board, Michigan (2011)
Contents |
The seven members of the Bloomfield Hills School Board are:
- Ingrid Day
- Ed Ford
- Kate Petersen
- Cynthia von Oeyen
- Jacqueline El-Sayed
- Robert Herner
- Mark Bank
Kate Petersen announced her resignation from the school board in October 2011. Petersen, who served as the secretary of the school board, said that she is resigning because her family is moving out of state. [3] In November, recall organizers dropped Robert Herner as a recall target. [4]
Recall support
A group called "Bloomfield 20/20" is supporting the recall. The group cites as its motivations for the recall the fact that the current board members supported the consolidation of Andover and Lahser high schools even though in November 2010, a $74 million bond proposal failed.[5]
The current board voted unanimously in June 2011 to merge Andover and Lahser high schools into Bloomfield Hills High School on two separate campuses by 2013.
Recall opposition
A group called "One Bloomfield United" opposes the recall.
Path to the ballot
Recall supporters had until November to gather 5,266 signatures for each recall target in order to force a recall election in February 2012. [3] After failing to gather enough signatures by the November deadline, recall organizers decided to extend signature-gathering efforts into January 2012 with hopes of getting the recall question on a later ballot in 2012. [4]
With a looming signature deadline in mid-January 2012, recall organizers announced they would not have enough signatures in the allotted 90-day window. Chris Fellin, a spokesperson for Bloomfield 20/20, said, "When we realized we weren't going to make that 90-day window, we decided not to turn them in, but to use them instead as a database." [2]
