In September 2009, the Ohio chapter of Americans for Prosperity filed a petition with more than 1,000 signatures. If the petition had been approved, the group would have been required to collect 120,683 valid signatures. After being certified by the Ohio Attorney General, the proposed repeal of Ohio's estate tax would have been considered by the state legislature. According to group's president, John Boyle Jr., the tax wasn't necessary and had led to people and businesses leaving the state. Should the legislature failed to act on the measure, proposal supporters would have had a chance to collect additional signatures to place the measure on the ballot.[1]
According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, estate tax revenue totaled approximately $317.1 million in FY 2008. The state received $61.4 million and local government received $255.7 million.[1]
The attorney general certified the petition on September 11, 2009.[2]
Past repeal attempts
In 2007, an attempt to repeal the estate tax failed to pass after the measure stalled in the legislature following Gov. Ted Strickland's announcement that he was prepared to veto the measure.[1]
