Raleigh, NC: Gov. Beverly Perdue shocked the political sphere late this morning by announcing she will not seek re-election in the 2012 election.
Perdue, a first term Democrat and the first female governor in the history of the Tarheel State, has been slipping in the polls and earlier this week announced she would propose a budget that includes a controversial sales tax increase for education. In explaining her decision, Perdue said a bid for re-election would "only further politicize the fight to adequately fund our schools."[1]
In 2008, Perdue eked out a victory over Republican Patrick McCrory, who is highly likely to run again in 2012. (The North Carolina candidate filing period does not close until February 29, 2012). Among those rumored to now be considering a run for the Democratic nomination include state Rep. Bill Faison, Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton, former state Senator Cal Cunningham, and Charlotte Mayor Anthony Fox.[2]
