A New York Supermajority Vote Tax Requirement may appear on the November 5, 2013 state ballot in New York as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment. The measure would require a two-thirds vote of the legislature to approve new taxes.[1][2] More specifically, the two-thirds vote would be required for any "increase, extension, imposition or restoration of any tax, fee, assessment, surcharge or any other such levy change."[3]

The measure is sponsored by Sen. Lee Zeldin .

According to the New York Constitution a majority vote is required in two successive sessions of the New York State Legislature in order to qualify a measure for the statewide ballot.

The proposed measure passed in the New York State Senate following a vote of 41-19 on January 19, 2011.[4]
