The commissioner serves as head of the Department of Environmental Conservation. The mission of the Department is "To conserve, improve and protect New York's natural resources and environment and to prevent, abate and control water, land and air pollution, in order to enhance the health, safety and welfare of the people of the state and their overall economic and social well-being."[1]
Current officeholder
The current officeholder is Joe Martens. He was appointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2011.
Appointments
The commissioner is appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate.
Compensation
In 2009, the New York Commissioner of Environmental Conservation was paid an estimated $136,000 according to the Council of State Governments.[2]
