The New York Commissioner of Education is a state executive position in the New York state government.

The Commissioner serves as chief administrative officer of the Department of Education and is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of, the Regents of the University of the State of New York.

Authority

The state Constitution addresses the office of commissioner of education in Article V, Officers and Civil Departments.

Under Article V, Section 4:

The head of the department of education shall be The Regents of the University of the State of New York, who shall appoint and at pleasure remove a commissioner of education to be the chief administrative officer of the department...
