The New York Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets is an appointed state executive position in the New York state government.

The Commissioner oversees the Department of Agriculture and Markets, which is responsible for promoting the agricultural industry, fostering environmental stewardship, and ensuring a safe food supply.[1]

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Darrel Aubertine. He was appointed to the position by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on January 10, 2011 and confirmed by the Senate on April 5.

Authority

The state Constitution addresses the office of commissioner of agriculture in Article V, Officers and Civil Departments.

Under Article V, Section 4:

The head of the department of agriculture and markets shall be appointed in a manner to be prescribed by law...

The commissioner is appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate.

In 2009, the New York Commissioner of Agriculture was paid an estimated $120,800 according to the Council of State Governments.[2]
