The Treasurer of the State of New Mexico is the chief financial officer of the government of New Mexico.

The treasurer is responsible for providing banking services to the state, they reconcile the state's bank accounts, they pay any outstanding debts or loans held by the state, they invest the state's money in operations and bonds as well as investing in local issues as needed. The main purpose of the office is to manage and invest state monies.

The treasurer is elected every four years.

Current officeholder

The current treasurer of New Mexico is James B. Lewis (D). He was first elected in 2006 and is serving in his second term.

Authority

The state Constitution addresses the office of state treasurer in Article V, the Executive Department.

Under Article V, Section 1:

The executive department shall consist of a governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state auditor, state treasurer, attorney general and commissioner of public lands,...

Elections

New Mexico elects treasurers in the midterm elections, that is, even years that are not Presidential election years. For New Mexico, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018 are all treasurer election years.

Term limits

The State Treasurer is limited to serving two consecutive four-year terms.

Compensation

In 2010, the New Mexico Treasurer was paid an estimated $85,000 according to the Council of State Governments.[1]
