The New Mexico Secretary of Education is a state executive position in the New Mexico state government.

The Secretary serves as head of the state Public Education Department.

The statewide position of Secretary of Education in New Mexico was created in 2003, when the state's voters approved Ballot Question 1.

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Hanna Skandera. She has served in this position since 2010.[1]

Authority

The state Constitution addresses the office of secretary of state in Article XII, Section 6.

There is hereby created a “public education department” and a “public education commission” that shall have such powers and duties as provided by law. The department shall be a cabinet department headed by a secretary of public education...

Qualifications

The Secretary of Education is required to be a qualified and experienced educator.

Appointments

The Secretary of Education is appointed by the governor and confirmed by the senate.

Compensation

In 2010, the New Mexico Secretary of Education was paid an estimated $173,859 according to the Council of State Governments.[2]
