The director serves as head of the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation. Their stated mission is "Helping to ensure that Montana's land and water resources provide benefits for present and future generations."[1]

The current officeholder is Mary Sexton. She was appointed by Gov. Brian Schweitzer in 2006.

Appointments

Per 2-15-111 of the Montana Code, the Director is appointed by the Governor with confirmation of the Senate. The director serves at the pleasure of the Governor and may be removed at any time.[2]

Compensation

In 2010, the Montana Director of Natural Resources and Conservation was paid an estimated $96,967 according to the Council of State Governments.[3]
