The Mississippi Superintendent of Education is an appointed state executive position in the Mississippi state government. Prior to July 1, 1984 the position was elected.

The Superintendent is the chief administrative officer of the state Department of Education and administers the department according to policies established by the state Board of Education.

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Tom Burnham. He has served in this position since 2009.

Authority

The office of the superintendent of education is established by Article VIII, Section 202 of the Mississippi Constitution.

Article VIII, Section 202:

From and after July 1, 1984, there shall be a State Superintendent of Public Education who shall be appointed by the State Board of Education, with the advice and consent of the Senate, and serve at the board's will and pleasure...

Per Article VIII, Section 202 of the Mississippi Constitution the Superintendent of Education is appointed by the state Board of Education with the advice and consent of the Senate.

Compensation

In 2010, the Mississippi Superintendent of Education was paid an estimated $307,125 according to the Council of State Governments.
