An effort to recall Mike Baker, Larry Ferguson and Gary Matson from their positions as board members of the Hitchcock County School Board was launched in July 2011 and abandoned in September 2011. [1]

Background

The recall drive was launched in response to a successful $7.4 million school bond election in May 2011 in which voters approved upgrades and renovations to existing school facilities. Shane Rippen was registered as the sole circulator of the petition. The legality of the petitions was questioned by the Nebraska State Patrol. There were concerns about whether Rippen was in fact the only person who circulated the petitions and whether citizens were told that the petitions would save an old school building from demolition and/or reduce property taxes. The school board voted 5-1 not to schedule a recall election. [2] In January 2012, local authorities interviewed petition signers as a part of their investigation. [1]
