The Maryland Superintendent of Schools is a position in the Maryland state government. The Superintendent is selected by the State Board of Education for a renewable four-year term and serves as secretary-treasurer to the board but does not have a vote.

The Superintendent directs the State Department Of Education and executes policy and regulations put forth by the Board of Education.[1]

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Bernard Sadusky (Interim). He has served in this position since July 1, 2011 and will replaced on July 1, 2012 by Delaware Secretary of Education Lillian Lowery. Lowery was appointed secretary in January 2009 by Governor Jack Markell. She is leaving her current post to take office as Superintendent of Schools for the state of Maryland on July 1, 2012.[2]

Appointments

The Superintendent of Schools is appointed by the State Board of Education to a four-year term with the possibility of renewal.

Compensation

In 2010, the Maryland Superintendent of Schools was paid an estimated $195,000 according to the Council of State Governments.[3]
