The question on the ballot said, ""Do You Favor the Changes in Maine Law Limiting the Number of Terms which May Be Served by Maine's Representatives to the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate Proposed by Citizen Petition?"
Declared unconstitutional
After the measure passed, the League of Women Voters filed a federal lawsuit, League of Women Voters of Maine v. Diamond, challenging its constitutionality. The United States District Court for the District of Maine determined the initiative to be unconstitutional on May 26, 1995 and the state legislature subsequently repealed it.
