Jim Buchan recall, Yuba College, California (2010)
An effort to recall Jim Buchan from his position as president of the board of the Yuba Community College District in Sutter County was launched in April 2010.[1] Signatures were collected on recall petitions but election officials determined in early July than not enough signatures were collected. As a result, there will be no recall vote.
Buchan has been a trustee on the community college's board since 1999. His current term of office ends in 2012.
Teresa Dorantes-Basile, president of the Yuba College chapter of the California School Employees Association, advocated for the recall. She said, "We need a board that will hold the administration accountable instead of giving out $30,000 raises while cutting classes, cutting faculty and cutting classified, solely adding to our unemployment." When Dorantes-Basile speaks of a raise, she is referring to a $30,000 raise the Yuba Community College board of trustees gave to the college's chancellor. The board of trustees rescinded the controversial pay increase in March.[1]
Path to the ballot
7,051 valid signatures were required to force a recall election. The signatures had to be collected in a 120-day period that began on March 24.
On June 8, recall supporters submitted 7,524 signatures to the Sutter County Elections office.[2]
On July 1, Sutter County election officials said that a check of the signatures found that only 5,052 of the 7,524 submitted signatures were valid. 2,481 were invalid because the signers were not registered voters in the district, were duplicate signatures, or had other flaws.[3]
