HONOLULU, Hawaii: State legislators have begun moving quickly in order to fund an organ transplant center located in Hawaii. A bill could reach the office of Governor Neil Abercrombie as early as today.[1]
The bill was stalled in conference committee during the last session. This session, committee members were motivated to quickly reach an agreement on the bill. Governor Abercrombie also recommended that the Legislature pass the bill as quickly as possible this session.[1]
Hawaii hasn't had a certified organ transplant facility since the closure of Hawaii Medical Centers' two hospitals in Oahu last December. This means that to get on the transplant waiting list, residents of Hawaii must currently go to hospitals on the mainland.[1]
