The Georgia Commissioner of Natural Resources is a state executive position in the Georgia state government. The commissioner heads the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and carries out the policies of the state Board of Natural Resources, which is responsible for regulating the exploitation of Georgia's natural resources. The Board appoints the commissioner subject to the approval of the governor.

Current officeholder

The current commissioner is Mark Williams, who was appointed by the Board of Natural Resources on December 8, 2010[1], and confirmed by Governor Sonny Perdue the next day.

Williams is a director of Prime South Bank, past president of the WAyne County Chamber of Commerce, and past president of the Rotary Club. He is a former high school teacher and football coach and owns Harris Real Estate in Jesup, GA. Williams also served in the Army National Guard. He holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Georgia College and State University.[2]

Authority

The office of natural resources commissioner is established by state law.[3]

There is created the position of commissioner of natural resources.

Qualifications

There are no particular qualifications required of natural resources commissioners.

Appointments

Commissioners are appointed by the Board of Natural Resources and confirmed by the governor. The board itself is an 18-member body appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate.

Term limits

There are no term limits associated with the office of natural resources commissioner.

Vacancies

State law does not prescribe any particular procedure for dealing with vacancies in the office.

Duties

The commissioner of natural resources is directed to "supervise, direct, account for, organize, plan, administer, and execute the functions vested in the Department of Natural Resources..."[3] The department regulates the exploration and exploitation of Georgia's natural resources, as well as managing state parks and the state's historical places.
