Dean Florez (b. 1963) was a Democratic member of the California State Senate. He represented California's 16th Senate District. His last four-year term ended in 2010 and he was not able to run again for the California Senate because of the state's term limits. He formerly served as the Senate Majority Leader.

Florez has announced his candidacy for the Lieutenant Governor of California seat in the 2010 elections.[1]

Prior to joining the state senate, Florez served in the California State Assembly from 1998-2002.

Florez attended Bakersfield College and went on to earn a B.S. in Political Science from UCLA in 1986 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1993. He worked as a consultant to the Senate Budget & Fiscal Review committee from 1986-1991 and as president of the Ophon Consulting Group from 1995-1998.

Florez is married to Elsa Florez and they have two children.

Florez is a co-sponsor of Senate Bill 24, which would make it illegal to pay initiative circulators on a pay-per-signature basis.[4],[5]

Capitol Weekly, California's major weekly periodical covering the state legislature, publishes an annual legislative scorecard to pin down the political or ideological leanings of every member of the legislature based on how they voted on an assortment of bills in the most recent legislative session. The 2009 scores were based on votes on 19 bills, but did not include how legislators voted on the Proposition 1A (2009).
