Arizona's secret ballot amendment takes on lawsuit

MARICOPA COUNTY, Arizona: Today, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge will hear arguments surrounding a measure on Arizona's general election ballot that would extend the right of Arizonans to use a secret ballot in union organizing votes. Arguments heard will be regarding a lawsuit filed by a labor union that argues that the measure violates Arizona's "single-subject rule". The rule states that constitutional ballot measures should be limited to one question. The labor union that filed the lawsuit wants the measure off of the ballot.[1]
However supporters of the measure counter that the measure does not violate this rule and are arguing that it should not be removed from the ballot. Supporters also claim that secret ballots prevent unions from intimidating workers when voting. Jonathan Paton, a state senator, sponsored the bill in the senate to put the measure on the 2010 ballot.[2][3]
