Alabama primary set; propane measure up for vote

MONTGOMERY, Alabama: The Alabama Primary Election is today and voters have been swarming to the polls in order to cast their votes for candidates, and the statewide measure dealing with the state propane industry. The measure asked voters whether or not to allow propane dealers to vote on collecting 1/10th of a cent fee on each gallon sold in the state. The measure, if approved, will allow the propane industry to levy the fee on itself.
The fee would be paid by retailers upon purchases of propane on a per-gallon basis. The revenue raked in from the fee would be used for rebates to buyers wanting to obtain propane equipment that would be energy-efficient. According to supporters, the measure will rake in $120,000-$150,000 per year. Polls in the state opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. CST. Four other measures will be decided on locally, but those measures will have an impact on the statewide ballot if enacted, because in order to pass local county laws, an amendment to the state constitution is needed.[1][2][3]
